If you build practice management software (PMS) for Australian clinicians, there are two ways to offer electronic prescriptions: build and conform your own ePrescribing capability, or embed an already-conformant provider like Parchment behind your interface.

What does the law require?

Software that issues electronic prescriptions in Australia must conform to the Australian Digital Health Agency’s (ADHA) current conformance profile and be listed on the public Electronic Prescribing Conformance Register. Conformance covers HI Service integration, prescription delivery service connectivity, observed NPDS testing and ongoing re-conformance as profiles are revised.

What does building it yourself involve?

A typical in-house build spans HI Service and identifier handling, integration with the prescription delivery services (REST APIs), observed testing, and ADHA registration. Vendors who have completed it budget roughly 9–18 months and several hundred thousand dollars, plus permanent re-conformance work — the CP2.3 profile retires on 30 September 2026, forcing all CP2.3-only software through the cycle again (what the deadline means).

What does embedding Parchment involve?

Parchment is registered on the current profile (CPv3.0.1, since August 2024) and carries the conformance obligations, so your software doesn’t have to. Integration options:
  • Embedded SSO — your users click “Prescribe” in your PMS and land in Parchment’s prescribing flow with patient context passed through. Most partners ship this in weeks.
